The decision tree — when to pick which
The §10.4 decision tree has three branches:
Branch 1: "I want it on Windows and I want it today"
If you want OpenClaw on Windows and the VPS path is closed (no SSH, no patience for a Linux box, employer policy against cloud VMs), the choice is between KiloClaw (§10.1) and Nut Studio (§10.3). Both are beginner-friendly. The differences:
- KiloClaw is hosted, $9/month, with a real approval-based security model and a model-flexibility story.
- Nut Studio is a Windows-native installer, $11.99/month, with the most channel integrations built in.
The channel's read: KiloClaw is the "easiest path" if you want lowest friction. Nut Studio is the "3-minute install" if you specifically want it on Windows and are okay with a Chinese-built installer. The cost difference is $2.99/month — small enough that the feature set should drive the choice, not the price.
If channel integrations matter (Discord + Telegram + iMessage), Nut Studio wins. If model flexibility and approval-based security matter, KiloClaw wins.
Branch 2: "I need self-hosted privacy on Windows"
If self-hosting is the constraint (privacy, control, no hosted-product dependency), the only Course 10 path is NemoClaw Windows (§10.2). It's the only one of the three with a true self-hosted model — the agent runs on your hardware, in a Linux sidecar inside Windows, with the NemoClaw security model intact.
The cost of this branch: 1–2 hours of install time, an Nvidia GPU requirement, and a non-trivial "stop and switch to VPS" rule if nvidia-smi doesn't return your GPU. The benefit: the same privacy and control as the NemoClaw VPS path, on Windows hardware.
The channel's read: this is the right path only if you actually need self-hosted OpenClaw on Windows specifically. If you can self-host on a $2 VPS, the VPS is the better answer (see Course 1).
Branch 3: "I want it on Windows and I have an Nvidia GPU and I want self-hosted"
This is the only branch where the §10.2 path is clearly the best answer. If you have an Nvidia GPU, the time, and the patience for an advanced WSL2 install, NemoClaw Windows is the right path. If you don't have an Nvidia GPU, you can't take this branch.

Branch 4: "None of these match — I'm a normal user who wants OpenClaw"
This is the most common branch, and the channel's answer is Course 1: OpenClaw — the NemoClaw-on-VPS path. - Cheapest: NemoClaw Windows, but only if you don't value your time
- Cheapest and time-efficient: NemoClaw on $2 VPS, the Course 1 path
- Most expensive: Nut Studio, by ~$33/year over KiloClaw
- Most time-efficient: KiloClaw or Nut Studio, ~10 minutes each
The math is straightforward. The decision is whether the time savings of a hosted path is worth the price difference.
The privacy story
The three Course 10 paths split on privacy:
- KiloClaw (§10.1): Hosted. The vendor runs the OpenClaw instance. The vendor has access to your agent's working directory, your chat history, your skills, your model config. The approval system is the security model; it doesn't change the hosted nature of the product.
- NemoClaw Windows (§10.2): Self-hosted. The agent runs on your hardware, in a Linux sidecar inside Windows. The NemoClaw security model (Landlock, network namespaces) is intact. You have full control.
- Nut Studio (§10.3): Hosted-lite. The installer is on your Windows machine, but the OpenClaw service is maintained by the Nut Studio team. The "self-hosted" framing is partial — you have a Windows app, but the underlying service is vendor-dependent.
The channel's framing in Course 5 §5.3 on hosted vs. self-hosted is direct: a hosted product is a better security story than a Mac Mini install (which has full system access), but a worse privacy story than a self-hosted install (which has none). For a coding agent handling sensitive data, self-hosted is the right answer. For a casual research bot, hosted is fine.
The "you should be on the VPS" rule
The channel's standing recommendation, restated from Course 1 and reinforced in Course 5:
A $2/mo NemoClaw VPS is cheaper, faster, and more private than every option in Course 10.
The Course 10 paths exist for the people who can't or won't do the VPS path. The "can't" cases are real — no SSH access, employer policy, Windows-only shop, home network with blocked ports. The "won't" cases are also real — the user doesn't want to learn wsl.conf or nano or systemctl. Both are legitimate.
The "you should be on the VPS" rule is for the people who can but haven't yet. The Course 10 paths are a stepping stone, not a destination. The destination is a clean VPS with NemoClaw, and the path to that destination is Course 1.
If you've finished Course 10 and you can do the VPS path, do the VPS path. The channel's recommendation didn't change.
Try it yourself
The hands-on goal for §10.4 is the decision — not a build.
- State your constraint clearly. Write down the actual reason you're considering Course 10 instead of Course 1. "I want it on Windows" is a constraint. "I want it on Windows and I have an Nvidia GPU and I want self-hosted" is a different constraint. The decision tree depends on the constraint.
- Walk the §10.4 decision tree. Branch 1 (KiloClaw or Nut Studio), Branch 2 (NemoClaw Windows), Branch 3 (NemoClaw Windows with GPU), or Branch 4 (Course 1).
- Pick a path and complete the corresponding article. §10.1 for KiloClaw, §10.2 for NemoClaw Windows, §10.3 for Nut Studio.
- Do the install and prove it works. Send a test message in the chat, connect one channel, set up one cron job.
- Time and cost the install. If the install was longer than 2 hours, or the cost is more than $12/month, the channel's recommendation (Course 1) would have been faster and cheaper. Note this for future reference.
- Reconsider the VPS path. If the install worked and you're happy with the Course 10 path, you're done. If the install was painful, switch to Course 1 — the $2 VPS will save you time and money over the next 12 months.

Common pitfalls
- Picking a Course 10 path by default. The channel's standing recommendation is Course 1. The Course 10 paths exist for can't and won't cases, not as the default.
- Comparing only on setup time. The "3 minutes" or "60 seconds" claims are about the install step. The 12-month total cost is what matters. For a long-running agent, the VPS path is the cheaper answer.
- Picking Nut Studio because it's "the 3-minute install" without checking the vendor. Nut Studio is a Chinese-built installer. The channel's review is honest about this. If the vendor provenance matters to you, KiloClaw is the alternative.
- Picking NemoClaw Windows without an Nvidia GPU. The install requires GPU passthrough. Without an Nvidia GPU, the install is unsupported and the channel's rule is "stop and switch to VPS."
- Picking a hosted path (KiloClaw, Nut Studio) for a privacy-sensitive workload. Hosted paths give the vendor access to your working directory. For sensitive data, the self-hosted path (NemoClaw Windows or NemoClaw VPS) is the right answer.
- Picking a self-hosted path (NemoClaw Windows) for a "just want to chat" workload. The 1–2 hour install is overkill for a casual bot. KiloClaw or Nut Studio are the right answer for casual use.
- Skipping the model-selection step. Whichever path you pick, switch the default model to one you've actually chosen — see Course 2: AI Models for the framework. Don't trust the auto-routing for production work.
- Ignoring the verification step. After install, the verification is "send a test message, get a response." If the test fails, the install failed — don't paper over it with retries.
- Letting the 12-month cost creep up. $9–$12/month sounds small. Over 12 months, it's $108–$144. A $2 VPS is $24 over the same period. The math compounds.
- Forgetting the migration path. If you outgrow the Course 10 path, the migration to a VPS is a 5-minute
